Anouchian Passport Portrait Series

The Anouchian Passport Portrait Series (2008 – ) is an ongoing suite of 198 images of 99 women and 99 men, whose portraits (held by the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut) were taken by the Tripoli-based Armenian photographer Antranik Anouchian (1908-1991).  Waheed’s renderings, which she groups into sets of nine by category – Men with Glasses & Suits, Women with Short Hair, etc. –  are drawn in pencil and charcoal by mimicking the automated movements of a printer from left to right over the paper’s ridges. Like apparitions, the drawings slowly reveal the faces of a long-disappeared era in Lebanon, captured by a man who himself escaped the mass obliteration of the Armenian people in 1915-1917.
