Drone Studies

In the series Aerial Studies 1-8, un-exposed Polaroid film has been imprinted with aerial maps of significant locations on Dhahran compound – the oil company Saudi ARAMCO’s administrative headquarters, where the artist spent her youth. Smudged overhead maps reveal sites that alternate between military and domestic, from guard houses and corporate headquarters to winding residential neighbourhoods bearing common American street names: Maple Lane, Elm Street, Spruce Street. Each site carries a personal and political relevance, for example the Oncology Treatment Center, opened in Dhahran to address the increasing number of lung cancer patients due to smoke inhalation from Kuwait’s nearby oil fires during the First Gulf War. Aerial Studies 1-8 extends Waheed’s interest in vertical occupation and views from above.
